SEJARAH TAWAU

Tawau was late in being settled at the time the area only covered with thick jungle…ranges of long damp grass, interspersed with swamps, wild animals and venomous snakes.
According to my grand father Kee Kim Swee( Kee Abdullah), Suluk were the first to settle. Why the came to Tawau? They were coming in order to collect jungle produce, the advantage of Tawau, giving them protection because of it locality act as shelter and combined with Tawau river’ fresh water.
Until 1891,when Beaufort the Governor of North Borneo visited Tawau did mentioned a Dutch schooner had been anchored in the mouth of theTawau river since sometime in 1879, that means the existence of settlement since then and there also reference to Dutch cemetery. The largest tomb bears the name of a Dutch naval surgeon and dated 1881, suggesting the existence of a small settlement before 1880.
